Some Places Change How A Person Sees the World.

Immersive place-based learning on a private reserve in Costa Rica’s Savegre Valley.

At Rafiki, students do not visit nature.

They experience inside a living system — forest, river, mangrove, watershed, coastline and community — and learn how to pay attention.

They sleep in elevated safari tents, study birds, plants and biology in the field, learn from local knowledge, swim in one of Central America’s cleanest rivers, and confront real conservation questions.

Groups are small. Learning is rigorous. Joy is real.

Every itinerary can be customized to your group.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

Maximum 20 students

When a young person learns to understand a place, they begin to protect it.

The Land That Teaches

Rafiki sits within a private wilderness reserve in the Savegre Valley, part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Savegre River — one of the cleanest in Central America — runs through the heart of the property.

This landscape is not a backdrop.

It is the curriculum.

Students encounter forest structure, watershed function, species relationships, coastal connection, and a long human relationship with land. The reserve is supported by hydro power from the land itself, with solar contributing to daily life.

Every program begins with attention to this place.

HOW STUDENTS CHANGE

Conservation as Lived Practice

At Rafiki, conservation is not a side program.

It is the ethical ground of the entire experience.

Students do not only learn about conservation.

They stand inside the questions it requires.

We do not take young people to a beautiful place so they will remember it.

We bring them into a living system so they will be changed by it.
